The house
دار العود التونسي

A living house
for oud and mālūf

In the heart of the Medina of Tunis: teaching, orchestra and lutherie gathered around one heritage — the Arabo-Andalusian mālūf.

Our story

Through the centuries,
one same melody

Mālūf is the Andalusian heritage gathered by Tunis after the fall of Granada, handed down from generation to generation by masters and brotherhoods, and carried through to us.

Founded to preserve this art and keep it alive, the institute brings together the rigour of teaching and the warmth of an open house, where one learns as much by ear as by heart.

The institute was founded by Zied Mehdi, a ʿŪd tūnsī player and composer, to preserve the ʿūd tūnsī and mālūf and pass them on from generation to generation. Meet the founder →

To go further: discover the instruments of the mālūf (ʿūd tūnsī, rbāb, ṭār, naġġārāt, darbūka) and the mālūf repertory — its history, its modes (tubû') and the nûba.

Our calling

Pass on, keep alive, share

Pass on

From master to student

A demanding yet caring teaching, faithful to the oral tradition of maqam and mālūf, adapted to every age and level.

Keep alive

A repertoire in motion

The institute's orchestra gives the Andalusian repertoire a stage: rehearsals, concerts and gatherings throughout the year.

Preserve

A workshop craft

The making and restoration of the oud perpetuate a rare craft, close to the musicians who play it.
